Helping you find your way back to balance

I’m Dr. Lisa Brekke, a physical therapist specializing in vestibular and neurologic conditions. At Brekke Rehab, I work with both acute disorders and injuries, as well as, individuals who have been navigating persistent or complex symptoms for months or even years.

If you have tried traditional therapy without finding the answers or progress you hoped for, it may be because your symptoms are more complex than a one-size-fits-all approach can address. Dizziness, migraine, concussion, and nervous system symptoms often involve multiple contributing factors that need to be considered together. At Brekke Rehab, we take the time to look at the bigger picture and create an individualized plan focused on understanding your symptoms, addressing the factors contributing to them, and helping you move forward with confidence.

Establish your baseline before an injury occurs. While many schools offer concussion baseline testing, these assessments are often not fully inclusive of all areas that may be valuable when establishing a comprehensive baseline. This assessment includes individualized baseline testing, education on concussion recognition and recovery, and a personalized review of your results. If you experience a concussion or suspected head injury, your assessment also includes a free follow-up consultation* to help guide your next steps and recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Brekke Rehab?
Brekke Rehab provides personalized, cash-based physical therapy for individuals in Iowa. Care focuses on complex conditions involving dizziness, vestibular disorders, concussion, migraine, neurological conditions, and autonomic nervous system regulation.

Do I need a referral to see you?
No. Iowa allows patients to seek physical therapy without a physician referral in many circumstances. If your condition requires additional medical evaluation or coordination with another provider, Brekke Rehab can help guide you toward the appropriate next step.

Do you accept insurance?
Brekke Rehab is a cash-based physical therapy practice and does not bill insurance directly. You may be able to submit a superbill to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so you should contact your insurance provider to understand your benefits.

Why choose cash-based physical therapy?
Cash-based care allows more flexibility in how your treatment is structured. Visits can focus on your individual goals, concerns, and clinical needs rather than being limited by insurance authorization or treatment restrictions.

Who can be treated at Brekke Rehab?
Brekke Rehab works with individuals experiencing dizziness, vestibular disorders, concussion and persistent post-concussion symptoms, migraine, neurological conditions, and other complex conditions affecting movement, balance, sensory processing, and autonomic regulation.

Do you treat acute dizziness or new vestibular symptoms?
Yes. Brekke Rehab provides evaluation and treatment for acute dizziness and vestibular conditions, including appropriate assessment and rehabilitation for individuals experiencing new or changing symptoms.

Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes. Telehealth services are available for appropriate patients and programs. Because some physical therapy assessments and treatments require hands-on care or specialized equipment, virtual care is determined based on your individual needs.

What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your first visit includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, history, goals, and concerns, followed by an individualized physical therapy evaluation. Your assessment and treatment plan are based on your specific presentation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

How long are appointments?
Initial evaluations and follow-ups are typically one-hour. This is adjusted if needed based on individual needs.  Your scheduling information will include the expected length of your appointment.

Can I see you if I have already seen other providers?
Absolutely. Many complex conditions involve multiple providers and may require different perspectives over time. Brekke Rehab can work alongside your existing healthcare team and, when appropriate, communicate with other providers to support coordinated care.

Do I need a diagnosis before making an appointment?
Not necessarily. You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. An evaluation can help determine whether physical therapy is appropriate and whether additional medical evaluation or testing may be warranted.

What if physical therapy isn't the right next step for me?
Your safety and overall care come first. If your presentation suggests that another type of evaluation, testing, or medical provider would be more appropriate, that will be discussed with you, and recommendations can be made for next steps.

Where are you located?
Brekke Rehab provides in-person care in Iowa, along with virtual services when appropriate. In-person location in North Ankeny, Iowa.

How do I schedule an appointment?
You can contact Brekke Rehab through the website to request an appointment or learn more about which service may be the best fit for you.

Do you offer anything besides physical therapy?
Yes. Brekke Rehab also offers programs such as the Migraine Wellness Program and specialized services designed to support long-term management and education. Brekke Rehab Consulting separately provides education, mentoring, and consulting for healthcare providers.
